National Lemonade Day

Simple Sweet Lemonade

While the earliest evidence of lemonade, called qatarmizat, date back to early 11th-century Egypt, the closest version of today’s lemonade made its debut in Paris on August 20th, 1630. It was made with lemon juice, water and honey, and was sold by street vendors from tanks strapped to their backs.

Did you know that there are actually two different types of lemonade? In North America, Canada and India, “cloudy” lemonade is made with water, lemon juice and sugar. In European countries, “clear” lemonade is made with carbonated soda instead of water and is flavored with lemon and/or lime oils. Although different regions may have their own flavor variations of lemonade (ginger, saffron or mint), it’s no doubt that this delicious drink is popular all over the world.

The suffix “-ade” can also be applied to similar drinks made with other fruits such as limeade and orangeade. Pink lemonade is made by adding a splash of fruit juice such as strawberry, raspberry or grape to create that distinctive pink color. Add alcohol and you’ve got hard lemonade.

Fresh lemonade is tart, sweet, oh so refreshing and the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day. Drinks with sour flavors actually stimulate salivation and help alleviate that dry mouth feeling associated with thirst and dehydration. It’s no wonder that lemonade is so thirst-quenching! Stay cool this summer with our own version of ultimate Frothy Vodka Lemonade!
